Rear Admiral Louise C. Wilmot was the first woman to command a US Naval Base: the historic Philadelphia Naval Base. She is the tenth woman to be selected for flag rank in the history of the US Navy. When she retired after thirty years of active service, she was the highest ranking female naval officer. Admiral Wilmot’s Washington duty included the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

 

During her thirty years of duty Admiral Wilmot had four commands:\rNavy Recruiting District Omaha Nebraska\rNavy Recruiting Area Five, Great Lakes\rNaval Training Center Orlando

Admiral Wilmot has a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey. She has a Master’s Degree from George Washington University and is a graduate of the Naval War College. Her awards include: Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit [with three gold stars], the Meritorious Service medal and the Joint Services Commendation.

 

After retiring from the Navy, Admiral Wilmot became the first woman to serve in a senior position with Catholic Relief Services, Baltimore, Maryland. She traveled throughout the US and the developing world on behalf of the agency.

 

She retired in 2000 and moved to Naples, Florida with her husband Jim. They have been married for forty years.

 

Admiral Wilmot serves on the Board of Directors for the GFWC Naples Woman’s Club and the Southwest Military Officers Association.
